Personalized, evidence-based physical therapy designed to reduce pain, restore knee stability, and safely rebuild strength after a CCL injury.
A CCL tear — the canine equivalent of an ACL injury — is the most common orthopedic condition seen in dogs. Whether managed surgically or conservatively, rehabilitation and physical therapy play a critical role in recovery. When the CCL is injured, you may observe the following signs:
Inflammation occurs due to tissue damage and fluid buildup in response to the ligament tear. Swelling is often most noticeable during the acute phase of injury or during flare-ups and setbacks.
Limping may be intermittent or constant depending on the severity of the tear. It often becomes more noticeable after exercise or prolonged rest. Limping does not always indicate pain — it is frequently the body’s way of compensating for joint instability.
Dogs may struggle to fully bend or straighten the knee, leading to a reduced range of motion. A classic sign of a CCL tear is sitting with the affected leg extended instead of tucked under the body.
To relieve discomfort, dogs often shift weight to the unaffected leg, creating an uneven stance. This compensation increases stress on the opposite knee — which is also at risk for a CCL tear.
Degeneration vs. Trauma
While trauma can cause CCL tears, nearly 80% of cases are due to degenerative changes over time, most commonly in dogs aged 5–7 years.
Acute injuries are more common in dogs under 4. Larger and giant breeds are more susceptible, but CCL tears can occur in dogs of any size.
Long-Term Joint Damage
Without proper care, CCL ruptures can lead to progressive osteoarthritis and meniscal tears.
These complications cause increased pain, reduced mobility, and a diminished quality of life for your dog.
Recovery Is Possible
The good news is that your dog can improve mobility even with a CCL tear — whether treated surgically or managed conservatively.
Canine rehabilitation guided by a certified professional is a crucial component of recovery and long-term joint health.
TheK9PT has treated numerous pups with CCL injuries alongside their pet parents — achieving excellent outcomes through personalized, evidence-based rehabilitation.
There are several factors that must be considered when determining the best treatment path. Every dog is different.
By consulting with both a veterinarian and a certified canine physical therapist, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of which option is best suited for your pup’s specific condition, lifestyle, and goals.
Many CCL cases can be managed successfully with rehabilitation alone. However, in young, highly active dogs with a complete CCL tear and associated meniscus injury, surgery may be necessary.
Post-operative rehabilitation is essential to promote safe healing and a full return to high-level activities such as running, jumping, and navigating stairs.
Surgery is not always the best option. At TheK9PT, we have an outstanding track record helping dogs recover without surgery when appropriate.
Factors such as age, activity level, weight, partial vs. full tear, and presence of a meniscus injury all play a role. A certified canine physical therapist can design a customized exercise program tailored precisely to your dog’s needs.
